If you’re looking for an SUV with a small footprint your research will likely bring you the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox and the Jeep Compass. These models have similar starting prices and exterior dimensions; however, they differ greatly in style and features. The Chevrolet Equinox has a bit more power under the hood and offers several family-oriented safety features not found in the Jeep Compass.
Equinox
When it comes to exterior design which model is best for you depends greatly on your taste. Where the Compass is rugged, the Equinox has a more refined and polished design. It features sculpted body lines and a modern grille that gives it an air of sophistication. Available LED lighting and a range of stylish alloy wheels help the Equinox strike a balance between urban elegance and road-ready functionality. It’s the kind of vehicle that looks equally at home in the city as it does on a weekend getaway. The LED lighting and bold wheel designs do add a touch of modernity, but it’s clear this vehicle can take on rougher terrains.
Compass
The Compass, on the other hand, has a very particular design that appeals to the brand’s primary base of outdoor enthusiasts but may not match the tastes of those looking for a sleeker aesthetic. The Jeep has a boxy silhouette and robust lines, and the large seven-slot grille commonly found in Jeep vehicles.
Equinox
The 2024 Equinox seats up to five passengers in two rows. Both rows offer plenty of headroom and legroom in the front row. Adults will feel comfortable in both. Its long list of available creature comforts includes heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and available heated second-row outboard seats. You’ll also enjoy active noise cancelation and an available eight-way power adjustable driver seat. Chevy also offers a mile-long list of add-on features that even includes an available first-aid kit.
Compass
Inside the Compass, you’ll find a functional, if somewhat utilitarian, cabin. The materials are durable, reflecting its off-road capabilities, but they may not offer the plush feel some drivers desire. The base model has a lot of hard plastics and less appealing materials, but bumping up to a higher trim, you’ll find that the TrailHawk has finer materials and interior design. However it will cost much more and the Compass already has a sticker price over $2,000 more than the Chevrolet Equinox.
Equinox
The 2024 Chevrolet Equinox sports 29.9 cubic feet of space behind the second row, and with the 60/40 split seats folded, the Equinox has a total of 63.9 cubic feet of space.
Compass
Although the Jeep Compass passes up some of the plusher accommodations in lieu of a more utilitarian focus in the lower trim levels, it comes up short on cargo space. The 2024 Compass has 27.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row of seats and a total of only 59.8 cubic feet.

However, there are a few trade-offs. For instance, the Equinox has four USB ports in the base model and up to six in the higher trim levels. The Compass only offers three in the base model and you’ll have to bump up to the Latitude trim for a fourth. The Compass offers Amazon Alexa while the Equinox does not, but with voice command pass-through, drivers can use their preferred voice assistant via their mobile device.
As with entertainment features, the list of safety technology in the base models of the Equinox and the Compass are very similar, and shoppers will have to decide between a few trade-offs. Both models have the following features:
On top of their shared features, the Chevy Equinox offers GM’s Teen Driver Technology, a full suite of family-oriented features aimed at providing additional support to parental figures teaching young drivers the rules of the road. The trade-off is blind-spot monitoring and driver attention monitoring, both of which are offered in higher trims of the Equinox. The Compass, unfortunately, doesn’t offer a comparable set of teen-driving assistance.
